I have seen pastors “tastefully” remind me of “offensive” things Charlie Kirk said. I have seen pastors darn near deify him. I have seen pastors declare (again) culture war. I have seen pastors call for gun control. And, perhaps most shamefully, I have seen pastors say nothing at all lest they ignite a “political firestorm” within their congregation. The assassination of Charlie Kirk is an act of evil – and the church MUST address the evil if it is to remain the church. For the church, nothing else should matter.. . .
Save for the very dark and insane corners of the internet (and briefly MSNBC) the assassination of Charlie Kirk has been universally condemned. Even the late night hosts lacked anything snarky to say. There is no news to report, as the manhunt for the shooter continues. The reporting chaos is beginning to settle and the real journalism is finally taking hold. The calm and quiet that should have happened yesterday seems to finally be here. Reasonable reaction to the event has begun to see the light of day.. . .
The news about Charlie Kirk is a few hours old now. We know virtually nothing save that he was shot and is dead. And yet, media is full of speculation, spin, nonsense and in a few instances, remembrances and obituaries. And I just want them to shut up. My instincts in times like this is to say nothing, basically because all there is to do is to mourn and pray. But clearly given the cacophony that has arisen in these last few hours, no one knows how to to that, so this post is my likely vain attempt to lead us through it.. . .
My goodness it is hard to sort the news from the nonsense these days. Depending on your source the big story of the day yesterday was something about some birthday book – which definitely was NOT news, Or it was the Israeli strike against Hamas leadership in Qatar. I am not even going to begin to unpack that strike – I will leave that up to three pieces from The Free Press – One – Two – Three. The implications of this are massive. Relatedly, this is stupid. It so deeply cheapens the Holocaust as to be disgusting. But I think the real news is the news and the increasingly evident lack of rational thought that has lead to confusion about what is and is not news.. . .
Josh Hammer penned a RCP op-ed the other day entitled, “The Art Of The 80-20 Issue.” It is about how Trump cuts right to the heart of issues and by doing so is restoring common sense to our governance. And yet it gives me pause.. . .
This: “The student debt crisis isn’t a natural market phenomenon; it’s the predictable result of decades of government interference. Since 1980, average tuition and fees have increased by 1,200 percent, while consumer price inflation has risen only 236 percent over the same period.” Demanding that we ask, is it worth it?. . .
Much liberal progress has been made on the back of claiming to be “offended” by one thing or another. No one wants to offend anybody and so we conservatives apologize and grant the liberals ground. This is especially true if the liberals threaten to throw a tantrum of some sort – a riot, a protest, a tweet. They have turned being offended into a political offense and it is coming to an end.. . .
