Trump signals new U.S. Army base coming to Poland

(The Center Square) – A U.S. military base in Poland may be on the horizon as President Donald Trump announces “major progress is being made” in establishing an Army base in Eastern Europe.

The president credited his friendship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, citing a “great U.S./Polish alliance” in a Truth Social post Thursday afternoon. Trump added, “the location will be announced very soon.”

Poland is already home to a U.S. Army Garrison with approximately 10,000 U.S. troops serving there on a rotating basis.

The president’s announcement comes months after the U.S. announced it would remove 5,000 American troops from Germany within the year.

In late April, The Center Square asked the president if he was also considering pulling troops out of Italy and Spain following the countries’ decisions not to provide any support in the strikes on Iran.

Trump indicated that he would consider doing the same with Italy and Spain.

“Yeah, probably will. Why shouldn’t I? Italy has not been of any help. Spain has been horrible. Absolutely,” the president told The Center Square.

Germany is currently home to more than 36,000 American troops, the largest population in Europe. In comparison, Italy is home to nearly 13,000 troops and Spain has nearly 4,000, according to USA Facts.

The president has been at odds with many European leaders over the conflict in Iran. Since the strikes began Feb. 28, Trump has expressed deep frustration with NATO countries over their lack of support for the U.S. strikes on Iran, despite the U.S. support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Poland has been seen as a possible location for a build-up of American troops as it is geographically closer to Russia. Poland currently leads NATO nations in Europe in defense spending as a share of gross domestic product (GDP).

Additionally, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has credited Poland for demonstrating its ability to defend its own border, hoping Poland would serve as an example for other NATO nations.
