A 27-year-old Queens woman and her 5-month-old daughter were killed after a 22-foot speedboat carrying 14 people capsized near the Statue of Liberty Saturday night. Twelve other people were rescued from the water and suffered mostly minor injuries.
Authorities say the boat overturned near Liberty Island shortly before 10:30 p.m., prompting a large response from the NYPD, FDNY and U.S. Coast Guard. Police divers recovered the mother and infant, who were taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead.
The boat's operator, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez, was initially charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Federal prosecutors have since taken over the case, and Hernandez was transferred into federal custody as authorities investigate whether the vessel was being operated as an illegal charter and whether it met federal safety requirements.
Louisiana health officials are urging beachgoers to take precautions amid an unusually deadly summer surge in Vibrio vulnificus, a potentially life-threatening bacteria found in warm coastal waters.
The state has confirmed nine infections so far this year, with all nine patients requiring hospitalization and five dying. Health officials say the numbers are above average for Louisiana.
The bacteria thrives in warm seawater and is especially common in brackish areas where fresh and saltwater mix, including estuaries and lagoons. Most infections occur between May and October, particularly along the Gulf Coast.
People can become infected when an open wound is exposed to contaminated coastal water or by eating raw or undercooked seafood. The CDC says Vibrio vulnificus is the deadliest type of Vibrio bacteria, with about one in five people who become infected dying from the illness.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected President Donald Trump’s latest 15-point plan for Gaza, saying Israeli forces will not withdraw from the territory until Hamas is fully disarmed.
In televised remarks Sunday, Netanyahu said Israel would require the dismantling of all Hamas weaponry before any military withdrawal. The position puts Israel at odds with the U.S.-backed proposal, which calls for Hamas to disarm in exchange for a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Negotiations between U.S. and Israeli officials over implementation of the plan are continuing.
Two helicopter pilots have died after their Sikorsky Skycrane crashed while battling a wildfire in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest.
The aircraft went down Friday morning while working under contract with the U.S. Forest Service. Officials initially could not reach the wreckage because of dangerous fire conditions, but crews entered the area Saturday and confirmed both pilots had died.
The crash also ignited a new fire that spread into the existing wildfire, which has now burned nearly 174 square miles, or about 451 square kilometers.
The pilots worked for Helicopter Transport Services. Their identities have not yet been released. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, though officials say determining the cause could take a year or longer.

Data centers are shaping up to be a major flashpoint in the midterms, and we're breaking down both sides of the argument today. On one hand, critics say they're a drain on local resources—guzzling water and energy, driving up utility bills, and turning communities into industrial eyesores . The counterargument is clear: if America wants to stay competitive in the global AI race, we need the infrastructure to support it. Former Trump campaign adviser, Steve Cortes, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp both weigh in on this hot topic issue.

In 1783, as the Revolutionary War neared its end, the future of America remained uncertain. The Continental Army's officers were discontented, their patience worn thin by Congress's failure to provide the promised pay. Some even contemplated using military force to compel the government. Understanding their frustration, George Washington recognized the peril of their anger turning against the very liberty they had fought to secure. In this episode of Foundations of Freedom, Washington confronts his officers, urging them to prioritize honor, patience, and loyalty to the Republic over the temptation of rebellion. Instead of leveraging their discontent to consolidate his own power, Washington used his influence to guide them towards restraint.
